Like most of the Marauders' plans, there was a good chance that they could get caught or that Peter could be severely injured. Peter was used to this by now though. He was no longer anywhere near as timid and worried about getting into trouble as he had been five years ago when he had started at Hogwarts. He'd realized by now that the risk was what made it more fun. The risk made it worthwhile when they succeeded.
This plan was a bit different from their usual ones though. For one thing, it was just Peter and Sirius in on it. They'd been much closer than they used to be. Sirius had placed himself in charge of putting Peter through bootcamp on how to act around girls. Peter liked the attention. Once he got over his initial concerns about it, he had opened up to the idea and was quite enjoying himself.
Today's plans did not involve any girls though. No, today they were going to give Mrs. Norris what she deserved for having chased Peter the other day. Peter was going to serve as bait by turning into Wormtail. Once Mrs. Norris decided to chase him, Sirius would come to the rat's rescue as Padfoot. Mrs. Norris deserved it, not only for having chased Peter around the school but for every time that stupid cat had nearly ruined their plans.
Peter really didn't like cats. This was largely due to his ability to become a rat, but even before that, he always felt like cats did not like him. He found this to be no different with Professor McGonagall, who they learned one day in class was an animagus (legally of course). She seemed to think very little of him. Not without reason, Peter could hardly keep up in that class. It wasn't that he lacked skills in Transfiguration. In fact, he was quite advanced in the subject. However, McGonagall terrified him and he couldn't manage to focus well enough in her class, which only made things worse.
Mrs. Norris was worse than McGonagall though. At least the head of their House was a bit more forgiving. McGonagall also would not chase him down the halls like that. He imagined she'd be too dignified, even as a cat, to chase a poor rat around the school. That thought was enough to make Peter want to laugh. However, he kept his ridiculous thoughts to himself, as usual.

It seemed a bit off to be somewhere with Peter while James Potter wasn't glued to Sirius's side. He loved James like a brother, but sometimes a break was really what they needed from each other at times. After all, when would Sirius get all the attention? And Peter as well, once he excelled in the training he was receiving from yours truly. Sirius knew that with his help, Peter could be great. Staying away from James Potter for the time being should be a helpful thing at the moment. After the chase, maybe they could go to Hogsmeade to grab butterbeers and catch a couple of girls eyes.
Not dates though, Sirius never took dates on first meet, it was one of his rules. He had explained all of these weary rules he had about girls and told Peter that he didn't need to keep to them, they were just what he went by.
"Wonder if McGonagal is rat hunting tonight?" Sirius asked, winking at Peter. He wondered if he could make her beg for mercy to give him an A on his term paper...
"Mrs. Norris," Sirius stage whisper called. "Here kitty kitty kitty."

Sometimes, at moments like this, Peter wondered why he and Sirius had not always spent more time together. They had similar senses of humor and sometimes, Peter felt like Sirius could read his mind and would voice the things that Peter never thought he should. Then Peter would remember that that is exactly why they were not closer. Peter didn't voice those thoughts. James was the loud confident one who was best friends with Sirius. Peter was one of their best friends too, but they did not have the same bond.
Peter laughed, a somewhat nervous laugh. "You don't think she really...?" he trailed off, his eyes slightly wider at the thought that McGonagall would transform into a cat to amuse herself by chasing rats. He was grateful that he rarely had to run around by himself while transformed, even though he knew it wasn't true.
Peter wondered vaguely what would happen if McGonagall did indeed hunt rats and she caught him. Would he have time to transform back into human form before she could kill him? Would she then get him in trouble for being an illegal animagus? Or would she be too embarrassed to admit that she was hunting rats?
"Here kitty, kitty!" Peter repeated. Feeling a bit braver as a sudden idea occured, he continued. "We're causing trouble and shouldn't be here!" Of course, Peter doubted that Mrs. Norris could understand what they were saying, but it was a rather amusing thought.

"McGonagal? Chasing rats? Nah, she has more class than that mate. She's human, she gets to enjoy better meals than cats do mate," Sirius answered brightly, patting Peter's back good humoredly.
Sirius suddenly wanted to have a closer bond to Peter since James had him, and Remus was just... Remus. But Peter needed to be looked after as well as a member of the "gang." Sirius suddenly remembered a rumor he heard about Peter hanging around a few Slytherins who were rumored to be working for Lord Voldemort. Growing serious, Sirius looked at his friend with concern. They couldn't take his friend away, if they were messing with him, Sirius wanted to help. He opened up his mouth to say something to Peter about it, but at the corner of his eye, he saw Mrs. Norris appear in the corridor to the left and got excited. "Now Wormtail!" he crowed, excitement appearing in his eyes. Oh he did love a good daring risk!
The moment of concern had been replaced by mischief, and sadly Sirius forgot all about the rumor he had heard.

Peter nodded. That made perfect sense. McGongall would not eat rats. That was ridiculous. Then again, the thought that three teenage boys would illegally become animagi to help their werewolf friend with his monthly transformations was rather ridiculous too. Peter thought that was a different kind of ridiculous. The kind that would be expected of the Marauders. McGonagall would not be part of such ridiculousness as rat hunting.
Peter had always managed to be the odd one out in the group. He loved and admired his friends and they watched out for him, but the bond was not the same. James and Sirius were obviously the closest. Remus wasn't as close but Remus seemed to be the type of person who didn't need to be as close. Peter needed to be close though. He needed his friends to make him brave, to show him that he could be great, if only he wasn't so bloody nervous all the time.
He had indeed been confronted by a few of the Slytherins awhile back. He'd tried to stand up for himself. He still thought his friends were invincible. He did not want anything to do with the people Prongs, Padfoot, and Moony seemed to hate so much. Peter did not want to loose his friends. He'd gotten hexed and had to go to the Hospital Wing. He didn't tell the others because he didn't want them to know that the Slytherins had gotten the best of him.
Peter spotted Mrs. Norris as soon as Sirius spoke. He cast one quick glance over his shoulder to make sure no one was there before transforming into Wormtail.
The rat froze in terror when it saw the cat. PREDATOR! RUN! The rat was screaming in his head. Peter was fighting for control though. He had to be brave. He had to get the cat's attention not hide. The rat tensed for a moment, neither side of his poor mind able to gain control. Peter won. Wormtail dashes across the hallway, slightly towards Mrs. Norris.
Peter really hopes that Sirius knows what he is doing and is ready to transform. The rat very much wants to go hide somewhere, anywhere. There is a predator and he needs to get away. Peter won't let that happen though. He has to be brave. He has to help Sirius give Mrs. Norris what she deserves.

Sirius was waiting for the right opportune moment to sprang into action, where he would transform into his dog form and became Padfoot. He looked down at the floor intently for Peter- Wormtail, who seemed to have frozen in terror around the cat. He hoped he wouldn't let his rat form take over and hide, it wouldn't be much fun to chase Mrs. Norris with no reason- wait yeah it would.
Peter had checked over his shoulder before transforming, so Sirius hadn't bothered checking first. Once that cat took after his friend, excitement vibed through every nerve in his body, and he longed to chase his prey that was chasing the predator. Quickly he transformed in the darkness and barked wildly, estatic that it happened right once again. He shook his long black fur and put his nose to the cold floor, sniffing around for their scents and looked up, getting used to his dog vision. Where had they gone?
He saw a busy tail go around the corner up a head and gave a great big bunny hop and took off after Mrs. Norris and Wormtail, very much into his action role.

'Do not panic," Peter repeated mentally repeated over and over again. The rat had very different plans though and was continuously screaming PANIC! PREDATORS! RUN! HIDE! PANIC! Peter was firmly in control, it just really wasn't helpful to have that other little voice shrieking so much. This was definitely worse than his suspiciously-Sirius-like conscience when talking to girls.
Speaking of Sirius, the rat could sense Padfoot. Despite the fact that he was a large black dog, Wormtail remembered Padfoot. Padfoot was safe. Wormtail wanted to run to Padfoot. Padfoot could protect Wormtail from the PREDATOR. The rat tensed, refusing to move once again as it fought Peter for control.
Peter knew he could not run to Padfoot yet. He had to get the cat to really chase him first. He forced the rat to dart across the hallway and down the next corridor right past Mrs. Norris, who took up the chase. Merlin Peter hated cats. He scurried down the hallway as fast as his tiny little rat legs would carry him, not bothering to check for Padfoot or to see how close Mrs. Norris was. That would only cause the rat to panic more. He just had to trust Padfoot.

Instinct wanted to take over and chase the chubby rat that the cat was chasing as well, but Sirius knew that the rat was an alley, a best friend. This was just another normal night except for one thing; Prongs wasn't there, their other alley.
Panting, the dog shook himself and continued following after the rat and the evil cat that caused hell. He was gaining in on the two, and waited to pounce. After a moment he did pounce on top of the cat and tilted his head down to be all smug about catching it. At that moment, if he could talk, he'd say all smugly, " 'Ello Poppet," but he couldn't say anything in his dog form. Instead, after a moment, he barked loudly, sending the cat in an angry fit and had to jump off it in order to avoid being scratched. In a moment of triumph, he looked down at the rat and joyously barked at it. They won! Wait- prey getting away, prey getting away! Within an instant, Padfoot forgot celebrating the capture and chased after the cat at full speed as it started howling down the corridors as if somebody were torturing it.
He winced at the awful sounds. No one was there to hear the poor cat- the owner was probably way across the other side of the building. This time the dog was going to win over the cat!

Wormtail squeaked in triumph when Padfoot caught up with the cat. Mrs. Norris' howling caused the rat's hair to stand on end. The rat was very glad that the large black dog had pounced on the cat and not chased him. However, the rat was also very worried that this was only going to make the cat angrier. Peter was celebrating though. Mrs. Norris was finally getting what she deserved for following them around and chasing him when he had transformed.
Wormtail squeaked again when Padfoot barked in triumph. The squeaking quickly turned into terror though when Mrs. Norris got free and began to run in his direction. PANIC! RUN! PREDATOR! PANIC! ANGRY PREDATOR! The rat part of his brain screamed. The rat tensed, refusing to let Peter take control and lead the chase. Just before Mrs. Norris would have reached him, though she was probably a lot more concerned with escaping from the dog than chasing a rat, Peter got control and raced out of the way.
Mrs. Norris continued down the hall, pursued by Padfoot. Wormtail cautiously checked in both directions before transforming back into human form. He was out of breath and his heart was racing but he hurried down the hallway after Padfoot and Mrs. Norris to see if Sirius could catch her again or not. It was much easier to focus and enjoy this while in human form since he didn't have the rat's mind going into hysterics.
