Lily was taking her time walking back to the gryffindor tower after lunch, and she was preparing for a short nap before her next class, a few hours later. For some reason, she hadn't been sleeping as well as she typically did, and she found herself tired in class, which wasn't a good thing. She also found that her empty class period was good for sleeping and catching up on her work. Seeing as she didn't have to worry about NEWTS or OWLS, she was actually enjoying her time at Hogwarts again.
Halfway to the tower, she was stopped by a younger girl, one she had met on the Hogwarts Express. The girl was a first year, a Gryffindor, and her name was Mary. Lily smiled at her.
"Hello, Mary. How have your classes been so far?" she implored. The girl nodded as Lily smiled down at her.
"Hi, Lily! They've been alright... I sorta feel overwhelmed, being muggle-born and all..." replied the girl. Lily felt her heart melt.
"I know just how you feel. I felt that way when I was a first year."
"Really? You, muggle-born, Lily?" she asked, excited. Lily nodded.
"It's something to be proud of, alright?" Lily said, making sure the girl was told what Lily had to figure out on her own. "You just have to work a little bit harder. And if you ever need help, don't hesistate to ask, alright?"
Mary smiled brightly and thanked Lily, and then ran off to her class. Lily then continued on her way to the Gryffindor common room, unaware that someone else had witnessed her entire conversation.

James watched as lily spoke to the first year, he smiled at her comment about being proud to be a muggle born, she was right, that was what James liked about her, she was so strong and so perfect to everyone in everyway. As she carried on walking up to the Gryffindor common room he started up the stairs after her. She was bout to reach the portrait when he called out her name.
"Evans" he said walking with a slight strut towards her, sometimes he hated the act he put on around her, but it seemed quite natural whenever she was around. "How are you?" he asked as he reached her.

Lily whipped her head around upon hearing his voice. Only he ever called her Evans, except for Sirius Black, his partner in crime. She then had to quickly decide: try to be civil with him, or completely ignore him like usual. Well, she thought, he's done nothing wrong so far... Lily then decided to try being civil and see where that got them. She was almost sick of arguing and fighting with James Potter. Almost.
"Potter," she greeted cooly, and then gave the password to the Fat Lady and entered. Apparently he followed. "I'm alright. You? Don't you have a class right about now?" she implored rudely, quite aware that those words were anything but civil. The most likely case would be that he didn't have class, seeing as they took nearly the same exact class... Another reason for her to be continuously annoyed with him.

James followed Lily into the common room, she answered his question coldly and James raised his eyebrows at his last comment. "Well Evans i know you seem to have my time table memorized but unfortunatly you need to brush up more of my where abouts, because i never have a lesson now" he said teasingly, he knew he annoyed her more then most people and although he didn't want her to hate him, his alter ego seemed to create a completly new person when she was around.
"Don't act like your not happy im here either, you know you love spending time with he" he said smiling as she headed towards a seat in the common room James following, he probably looked like a little lost puppy following her around, but he didn't care.

Lily rolled her eyes as he followed her faithfully. She took a seat on the couch, prepared to begin her potions essay, when she saw Potter take a seat not too far from her. She sighed angrily. He had only said two sentences, and she was ready to duel him. She pulled out her things and said, "Much to your disappointment, Potter, I've not memorized your class schedule. I merely forgot that our time tables were exactly the same."
She then gritted her teeth, and said, "Don't flatter yourself, Potter, your ego's already big enough to burst at any second." Come to think of it, she thought, I'd really like to be the one to burst it. And this, of all things, made her realize something. It made her think that maybe, of all people, she could be the one to change him. Maybe she, Lily, had the power to do that. To turn him into a good person.
Because, sure, his marks were phenominal (which Lily never understood, seeing as he never studied. It bothered her immensly, actually). And sure, McGonagall seemed to forgive him because he was the "best" chaser on the Gryffindor team. But in every other aspect of his personality, she thought, he was lacking. He wasn't very punctual, tending to arrive right as the bell was ringing. He was always showing off, picking on younger students, and bullying Slytherins. Oh, and his hair, she thought. His hair, which was always windswept, and sticking around at all ends, seemed to be his most prized possession. And, to further agitate Lily, he would run his hands around in it to mess it up even further.
But, as Lily thought these thoughts, she had no idea she was staring right at the end of the couch. Where James was, incidentally.

James wasn't looking at her as she started on about his ego. If you were as smart and good looking as he was people going out about how you are stuck up gets boring after a while. He turned back to look at her when she stopped talking. She looked deep in thought and she was staring right at him. James raised his eyebrows as she stared and he waited for her to realise that she was staring. When she finally did James grinned "For someone who stares at me like that i am surprised you have turned me down so many times" he said still smiling. It was true she had turned him down a few times but it never stpped James asking again he was determined.

She rolled her eyes, determined not to blush. "I wasn't staring at you, you blockhead. I was staring at the.. erm.. arm rest behind you," she said confidently. She crossed her arms over her chest and crossed one long leg over the other. "Again, your confidence has seemed to have gone to your head." Then, Lily looked down to see that her skirt had ridden up as she sat and crossed her legs. So she tugged on it and pulled it down, neck and face burning. Hopefully, she thought, Potter wouldn't notice. But as she looked up, she noticed that he had. So, to change the subject she said, "Where's Black? Or Remus?" She really wanted to know why she was alone with him... because it never happened.

James dragged his eyes away from her theigh as she pulled her skirt down to cover herself. He looked up to answer her question.
Jame shrugged, it was getting late and James knew that Sirius would be getting remus comfey in the shrieking shack. James would join them later but for now he would spend his time with Lily even if she did hate him. "Well Evans i really don't believe the arm rest excuse is going to work, i know you liek to look at me, maybe you could stare at me over dinner tomorrow night?" James said smiling cheekily his dark eyes on hers his glasses slightly ascue.

Lily stared at him. How he went from deflecting her reply to asking her on a date, she didn't know. But, this would be the perfect opportunity to begin her plans. She'd have to do some experimenting first.
"So, Potter," she began. "What would I get out of this ordeal? Besides death threats from your fan club and a complete evening alone with you, how would this help me at all? Or, better yet, why, on Earth, have you been so persistant in courting me?"
Lily watched him, knowing that he would reply any second now.

James smiled and turned his eyes away from her a little. He didn't want her to know that he was lieing or atleast not telling the whole truth about why he was so persistant, he though of a witty excuse for an answer and looked up and smiled her "Well Evans its more for you, i know you have been dieing to date me for years and i thought i would finally give in" he said smiling. She didn't look happy with him, but her green eyes were so beautiful when she was angry, he could hardly resist.

Lily, trying to remain calm, knew that if she wanted to change him, she would have to start with something that he would understand. She looked at him, barely blinking, and began to plan.
She swallowed, and said, "If I went on one date with you, would you...." she paused, thinking about how to explain this. "Would you... stop bullying? And stop picking on younger students? And would you promise to leave me alone?"
His face was unreadable for a minute, during the silence, while he thought.

"Its not like i really bully the younger students, just the Slytherins that annoy me" James said "Sirius is the one who bullies all the them, thinks it impresses the ladies" he added "And what would be te point in leaving you alone after one date, i want more then one date Evans" he said smiling "And you will to" he added "Eventually, when you see the real me" he added quietly.

Lily narrowed her eyes. "I'm about to says yes, after all these years, and you are going to negotiate the terms of my agreement?" she asked, not as surprised as she was angered. "Well, you can have that then," she said, her normal flames returning. "You know what I want, James?" she asked, standing with all of her belongings and looking at him intently. "I want to see the "real you," I really do. But until you can learn to understand that I have limitations and aversions to your ego, I'm not giving you the chance, alright?" Lily was truly fed up with him being so... him. "Change or forget it."

James couldn;t stand it any longer as she stood up and tunred to walk from gim he stood up fast and grabbed her hand spinning her around to face him "Now you listen here Evans" he said angerily "If my ego was so big why would i keep asking you out" he said "It kills me everytime you say no and im fed up with it" he said "I won't ever stop even if it kills my "ego" althougher" he said. He paused for breathe and looked into her eyes and he couldn't stop himself, he put his hand on her lower back and pressed his lips gently but passionatly against hers.

Lily felt a very strange feeling in her stomach. It was strange, she thought, because James wasn't supposed to be the one to make her feel this way. She pulled away quickly and looked around the room, glad they were alone. Her hands were still resting on his shoulders when she met his eyes.
And what she saw made her heart tremble.
James Potter had the deepest look of hurt she had ever seen in a person's eye. And instantly, she understood that he was right. he wouldn't give up. It was all up to her, what happened next.
So, ever so guiltily, but ever so softly, she leaned up and kissed his lips. His body tensed, and soon as he began to relax it again, she pulled away from him again.
"Don't let that happen again," she said, smiling at him, and picking up her books. She pushed some hair behind her ears and swallowed. "Where do you want me to meet you?"
